The Government is completely wrong in its policy of trying to solve the problems of the housing market by guaranteeing mortgages.
The problem we have in the UK is that there are not enough homes available. The only realistic solution is to build more-and quickly.
How can this be achieved?Â
High Street Bank sponsored Shared Ownership deals that the way forward. The banks can work with major building contractors (perhaps ones they already own or lend to?) and build homes that that are priced realistically for first time buyers. They can start by acquiring 50% or less of their homes but with the option to purchase the remainder of the equity at a pre- determined price when their financial position improves.
If finding sites looks like being problematic, the Government must incentivise landowners to realease sites for immediate construction, with exemptions to normal planning constraints granted to futher speed up the process.
We need  200,000  new homes a year for the next ten years to solve the property crisis in the UK.It can be done but it needs radical thinking and action.
