Olympic Fiasco for Visa and other greedy sponsors

Posted on: 16/08/2012

There were signs at every venue where you could buy anything at the Olympics proclaiming "Proud To Accept Only Visa".

Mind you, it was often difficult to pay using your Visa card, as 70,000 hungry and thirsty people at Wembley will tell you.  Their cards didn't work during the first Olympic football match and since the London Olympic Organising Committee had "helped" Visa by switching off the Nationwide Cash Machines at the venue, chaos reigned.

The power of the sponsors was highlighted in the publicity material issued in connection with the Games, where reference was made to the fact that only Visa cards would be accepted to "honour" the fact that Visa had been long term sponsors of the Olympics.

"Honour" a sponsor? Do me a favour!

Any organisation lucky enough to be allowed to sponsor the Olympics should get down on their knees and thank God they have been so fortunate.

THE OLYMPICS DOES NOT DEPEND ON VISA - OR ANY OTHER SPONSOR - FOR ITS SUCCESS.

The only brands allowed anywhere at the Olympics were those of sponsors.  IT WAS A SICK JOKE.  For example, Pimms couldn't be called Pimms at the bars because that company was not a sponsor!

The Games were a great success as a sporting event and a triumph for the UK.

As for the sponsors, they need to be put firmly in their place before the next Games in Brazil.  They cannot ever again be allowed to "buy" what appears to the Public to be total control of this unique event.
