Celebrity interview with Jack Whitehall

Jack Whitehall, the 22-year-old Big Brother and Mock the Week comedian from Putney in South London, tells us about life before fame…

Can you tell us about a time when you had to survive on a really small budget? Where did you live? What was your job? What did you do for entertainment? What/where did you eat?
At university in Manchester I was on a budget so it got to a stage where we were eating McDonald's three times a day, even the staff there ended up giving us a look as if to say you shouldn't be doing this to yourself! By the last week the house was down to four pairs of pants between five, it was like Russian roulette. We were also near a Wetherspoons which helped.

What kind of tricks did you pull for making your money go further?
Make sure you ask your parents separately for money, not together, that way you can double your earnings. Also saving on your phone bill by being shrewd about who you call, if a friend moves abroad or to another network they're dead to you.

Have any of those experiences stayed with you today?
Yes, I've lost a lot of friends.
