Democracy means rule to consent; consent to inequality

This website sings the praises of cash - and quite rightly.

First and foremost, if you have cash you have individual freedom that you don't have without it. A cashless society would be one where individual freedom was curtailed, in favour of central control, whether by Government or card schemes.

Some might say that the worst of all worlds would be a card scheme operated by a Government. Since this is exactly what will be introduced in Russia in 2013, we will soon see the impact. The Russian card will be a driving licence, identity card and ATM card, to name just some of its functions.
It should be known as the SCARED Card- S(tate) C(ontrol) A(nd) R(educing) E(ssential) D(emocracy).

Some people who do not know what they are talking about claim that democracy is over-rated. They will argue that in most countries people are more worried about putting food in their bellies and getting medicine to make their children well.

YES, AND IN MOST COUNTRIES THERE IS NO SEMBLANCE OF DEMOCRACY!

Let's get clear. Democracy is not about equality. Human beings do not want to be "equal". We are for the most part selfish, wanting more for ourselves.

In the West, we often claim to feel sorry for the poor but that sympathy doesn't extend to wanting to share their poverty. We want to be rich enough to give to the poor but we will not give so much that we too become poor.

So forget equality as being part of democracy, and that includes equality of opportunity. No parent wants their child to have an equal opportunity - they want their kids to prosper, at the expense of others as necessary.

So selfishness is a basic human instinct. That will not change and, fortunately, is not required to for democracy to work.

So what are the ground rules for democracy. Here we go:

* Everyone must have a vote and be allowed to cast it without fear. It doesn't go without saying: those votes must be accounted for fairly

* There must be a real opportunity to vote out the incumbent government within agreed timelines. In built majorities, however arising, destroy democracy

* There must be an acceptance by voters that they - and the government they favour - can lose and will accept the legitimacy of the outcome. In short, they must be prepared to await the next election as their next opportunity to change the government

* The government - the winner - must govern with reasonable consideration for all, including the losers

That's it. Four "rules".

A swift reading of the rules reveals that democracy cannot co-exist with:

* One-party government
* Family/tribal rulers
* Religious government
* Military government

There are many real democracies in the world - but with over 200 nations in existence it cannot yet be argued that democratic government exists in the majority of countries or for the majority of the world’s population.

It is the duty of those who live in democracies to bring that form of government to as many nations as possible. It is the only acceptable form of government.

ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL MEASURES AGAINST NON-DEMOCRACIES WILL BE NECESSARY.

It will not be easy but it must happen if we are ever to see a better world.
