Double movie magic for under a tenner!

In honour of National Student Money Week we challenged Beckie, our Student Blogger, to host a double-header movie night (complete with snacks of course!) for under a tenner! Here's how she got on...

Hi Guys!

I hope everyone is enjoying the slightly warmer weather as we head nearer to spring!

This month’s challenge was to do a double-movie night with yummy chocolate treats on a £10 budget for myself and 3 friends. The aim of this challenge was to prove that a fun time could be had by a group of friends staying in, rather than spending up to £30 at the cinema.

So, £10 doesn’t sound like much, especially considering I had to find two films and food. Normally when I go to the cinema, I pay about £6.50 for one student ticket, so with 3 of my friends being included in this challenge, I had to find a suitable alternative.

Nottingham has some great bargain shops around and some fantastic Easter offers are on at the moment. Forget going to Tesco, HMV or Blockbuster … In Nottingham, the place to go for cheap DVD’s is That’s Entertainment, a shop in the Victoria Centre which sells DVD’s CD’s and Games for outstanding prices! They constantly have a ‘2 Films for £5’ deal on, but when I went in this week, they had a ‘3 Films for £5’ deal on … that’s £1.60 a film!

As amazing as that deal was, I stuck to the challenge and found two very different films to watch. The first was The Holiday, starring 4 of Hollywood’s most famous actors and actresses. I chose this because it is a fun film that would definitely cheer us all up after watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose, the other DVD I bought. This chilling story really scared us all to bits, but watching a scary film is always better with friends!

As for the snacks, where better to go for your treats than Aldi and Poundland, both of which are in the centre of the city. I bought Haribo gummy bears for 89p and a pack of Cadbury’s Variety at £1.12. So, all together the double-movie night came to an amazing £7.01, which is just about the price of 1 adult ticket at the cinema!

Voila! A fun, cheap evening with your friends doesn’t have to be expensive at all!
