My cash story: Last year I was moving house and there was unfortunately a gap between moving out of my old place and into the new home. This meant I needed to place my furniture and most of my belongings into self-storage for a couple of months while I stayed at a friend's place until the new property was ready. Both the lettings agency and the removal company specified that cash was preferred, this made perfect sense to me and was in line with my past experiences in these cases. I assumed that the self storage facility I had booked with would have the same policy, so I allowed for this cost with my over-the-counter cash withdrawal. To my surprise, when I arrived at the self-storage company they informed me that they could not accept cash for security reasons, apparently to deter the type of customers who would be wanting to store prohibited goods.
This meant that I had to pay the storage costs using my debit card, and what with all the other costs that day, this extra cost made me go overdrawn at the bank. The punch line is that I not only incurred a £25 unauthorized overdraft fee, but several direct debits were not honoured and I assume my credit rating hit hard.
