New £50 shows cash is making a comeback

This week saw the introduction of a new £50 banknote in the UK.

The note, which maintains a similar colour and design to its predecessor, has been revamped and redesigned to incorporate more modern technology, giving the iconic pink paper note an updated feel while still staying true to its original style.

As well as a new 'moving' holographic strip, the new Bank of England £50 also features two new faces: Matthew Boulton and James Watt, two men instrumental to designing coins which were harder to counterfeit.

It is hoped that the introduction of a new, more secure £50, will make retailers more comfortable about accepting the larger tender. Up until now, many shops have refused the notes as a form of payment, believing that they are harder to distinguish from the fakes.

What the new £50 signifies however, is the modernisation of our much-loved British banknote, demonstrating its continued importance in our society.

So, keep an eye out for the new notes - now circulating at a bank near you - and take the time to take a closer look at your notes next time, you never know what cash histories lie behind it.
